Push vs. Pull: The Real Source of Sustainable Energy At Work

Most of us move through our working lives without realizing that we are operating from the same place: Push Energy.

What does that mean? We move forward by telling ourselves “I have to.”

We rely on willpower, discipline, and self-pressure to get through the day.

As we move from one responsibility to another, guided by calendars and tasks, we often stay goal-focused but this focus can easily turn into stress. Sometimes, when we compare ourselves with others, the push intensifies even more.We become driven, competitive and for a while this constant pushing does actually keep us moving.

But this type of energy has a limit. At some point, instead of carrying us forward, it begins to wear us down.

It consumes us. And our way of working becomes neither efficient nor sustainable.

The Hidden Cost of Push Energy

Push energy can be very effective in the short term. When a deadline approaches or a crisis arises, it mobilizes all our mental and physical resources and helps us bring things to completion.

Yet, its not sustainable and the reason is the following:

Push energy

  • Operates through stress

  • Requires constant alertness

  • Keeps the body and mind in “emergency mode”

When we work by pushing and forcing ourselves, motivation fluctuates. Work where we spend at least eight hours a day stops being a place of fulfillment and becomes merely a space we endure, waiting for “real life” to begin once it’s over.

Can this really change?

What Is Pull Energy?

Pull energy is the force that moves you into action without forcing you to act.

What draws you forward is so clear, meaningful, or exciting that you don’t need to motivate yourself. Moving toward feels natural to you. Neither your mind nor your energy resists.

While push energy says “I should,”pull energy makes you say “I want to go there.”

Can working hours and work days be nourished by pull energy?

Where Does Pull Energy Come From?

This energy comes from the meaning of what you are building.

Ask yourself: What is pulling me forward right now?

It doesn’t have to be a perfectly phrased goal. It doesn’t have to be a KPI.

Sometimes it’s a direction. Sometimes it’s the feeling of “this is how I want to do it.” Sometimes it’s a future that calls you, even if you can’t fully name it yet.

Pull energy often appears before words do. Its kind of a satisfaction bound in your daily actions.

Working With Pull Energy Does Not Mean Less Effort

Pull energy does not mean:

  • No stress at all

  • No effort

  • Abandoning discipline, planning, or structure

On the contrary, it often involves deeper and more genuine effort.

The difference is that the effort is supported from within. Even when you struggle, you still enjoy the process. The key is you may feel challenged, but you don’t feel depleted.

While struggling, you get to know yourself better. You experience your work and your life as a journey, even an adventure, and you genuinely try to do your best.

Because what you are doing:

  • Serves something larger

  • Creates meaning

  • Moves you in a direction that helps you grow.

That is why leaders who work with pull energy can remain more balanced even in demanding, high-pressure environments.

A Moment to Pause

In the rush of daily life, it’s not easy to notice this difference. That’s why a small pause can be powerful.

Insight Question for You:

  • What am I being pulled toward right now?

  • Do my actions call me forward?

  • Or am I simply pushing myself?

The answers may not come immediately which is okey.

Why This Is Critical in Leadership

How you manage your energy matters not only for you, but also for the people who look to you as a role model.

When you lead primarily with push energy you may get short-term results but in the long run, you burn out.

Leaders who move with pull energy, on the other hand:

  • are more consistent

  • make clearer decisions

  • and transmit far less tension to those around them.

An Open Invitation

If you would like to gain more clarity about what truly pulls you forward, you don’t have to explore this all by yourself.

Re-examining your relationship with work and transitioning toward a healthier, more sustainable way of operating is possible.

Making pull energy consciously your choice can create a powerful shift in your leadership, one that enhances both your performance and well-being.
